IMPACT OF STREET ART IN A PUBLIC SPACE
Analysis of work of a street artist at a public square in an urban village
2014 – 2015 | Shahpur jat, new delhi, india
Architecture, being a multi-disciplinary course, is closely associated with the field of art. Buildings, forming an important part of context are as important for the art, as the art is for the buildings itself. The hypothesis to my research states that art, along with the contextual architecture, brings about a change in the fabric of a space. The research aims to explore how street art transforms a space through changes observed in the form of quality of space, social structure, activity and behavioral pattern. It also aims to understand the perception of an artwork by the laymen, as well as how street art involves community and helps in reclaiming public spaces. An artwork, in the urban village of Shahpur Jat in New Delhi, is selected and studied.
The factors recorded are – perception of street art of a regular passer-by, stigma attached to street art, level of involvement of the community with the street art projects, need for street art and its contribution towards urban renewal and reclaiming public spaces, impact of street art on the selected site. These factors are recorded by documenting the space with the help of activity mapping. A survey questionnaire is prepared for three groups – Residents, visitors and artists/ architects. The three sites are visited and the survey questionnaires are distributed. The answers are recorded by interacting with the people.
A conclusion is drawn out and the recordings presented in the form of plans (activity mapping), illustrations as well as graphs. A theory is proposed based on the study and data collected and recorded, available for further research.
